Safe Auto Insurance advertises minimum coverage for minimum prices. If you live in the south you have, no doubt, been exposed to their television commercials. They have a catchy jingle that incorporates the company's telephone number. They advertise low price insurance and their motto is: "We keep you legal for less"

In February I decided to swap my auto insurance and called Safe Auto for a quote. The customer service representative was very personable and seemed to know her job well. She asked the required questions about my husband and my driving records and put me on hold while she prepared the quote. When she returned to the line she gave me a price that was less than others that I had been quoted, with a down payment that wasn't outrageous and the monthly payments were very affordable.

My policy began on February 18, 2007. I was asked questions by Safe Auto that I was not asked by other insurance agencies. Questions like, "Do you or your spouse take any medications daily?" When I responded that my husband did have a prescription medication that he took once per day, she informed me that this medication was on her "list" and that we would need to obtain a statement from his doctor stating that he was fit to drive. The required paperwork was to be sent to me and then, according to her, faxed to our physician to be filled out. We received the paperwork, which I promptly forwarded to my husbands physician. We received a response that if we wanted this paperwork filled out that we would need to make an appointment to see the doctor. This was a little irritating to my husband, as he would have to take a day off of work, make an appointment with the doctor, pay for a doctor's visit, not to mention sitting in that waiting room. It seemed that this insurance company that promised lower prices was going to end up costing us money. The receptionist for our physician set up the earliest possible appointment, which was a month away.

Wait until you have an accident with a Safe Auto insured. 6 Weeks ago a Safe Auto insured ran a red light and hit me in the side totaling my vehicle. They had some jack-leg appraiser come out and appraise the damage to my car. It was totaled. The other driver was sighted with three moving violations and he even admitted to the officer that he had run the red light. Clearly his fault! Safe Auto started out with an offer that was so insulting that had that person been in front of me and of male gender it would have been on. The lady (Barb) stated that there was preexisting damage. I challenged that by stating there was no damage to my car until their insured ran a red light and hit me. I requested to deal with a supervisor. After talking to the supervisor (Kim), she stated there was a problem with the cover sheet and the appraisal (conflicting information). After it was determined there was NO preexisting damage to my car they stood by their previous offer. My Insurance State Farm has

I CALLED SAFE AUTO AT 7:00 AM, I GAVE THEM MY ACCOUNT NUMBER AND THE CHECK NUMBER TO START MY INS. WELL I GOT TO WORK AND SOMEONE TOLD ME ABOUT ANOTHER COMPANY. I THEN CALLED THE OTHER COMPANY AND DECIDED TO GO WITH THEM INSTEAD. SO I CALLED SAFE AUTO BACK, AND TRIED TO CANCEL MY POLICY. KEEP IN MIND THIS IS ALL IN ONE DAY. THE LADY AT SAFE AUTO CANCELLED MY POLICY AND STATED THAT THEY WOULD STILL DEDUCT THE 190.00 FOR THE 15TH OF FEBRUARY BECAUSE THEY HAD FAXED ME THE POLICY. I HAD DONE A CHECK BY PHONE SO I CALLED THE BANK AND STOPPED PAYMENT. WELL ON FEB. 15TH, THE 190.00 CAME OUT ANY WAY, SO I WAS NOW OVERDRAWN, BECAUSE YOU CANNOT STOP AN ACH DEBIT!!!! NOT TO MENTION I HAD OTHER CHECKS ABOUT TO COME THROUGH!! SO NOW I AM LOOKING AT 400.00 IN CHECK OVERDRAFTS AND NSF FEES. I TRIED TO GET SAFE AUTO TO DEPOSIT THE MONEY BACK AND THEY SAID NO THAT WAS NOT POSSIBLE AND THAT I WOULD HAVE TO WAIT FOR THE CHECK TO BE MAILED WHICH COULD TAKE UP TO 30 DAYS... YOU MIGHT WANT TO THINK TWICE

I signed up with Safe Auto and they have ripped me off bigtime. I told the agent that I did not get paid until the Thursday of the week I signed up. I was told that they would hold it until Friday to make sure I had enough money in the account. Friday came and no money came out of the account. Confused, I called Safe Auto and was told that there was no record of my payment being set up. I explained that when I opened the policy that I did not get paid until three days later and that the payment would come out on Friday. I was told then that the payment request was sent to the bank and was rejected. I went to my bank and there is no record of any payment requests on my account. Now I get a letter in the mail today stating that I owe another $100 by this Friday and that if I dont pay my policy will be cancelled. I was told this was because of the initial payment not being recieved. That was not my fault and I do not see the reason for having to pay for their mistake. I gave them the bank

(CONTINUED FROM ABOVE) coverage. Because Safe Auto pulls in a customer base that tends to have a lower education level, no one explains to the client that they have very specific limits of coverage and if they exceed those limits, they're responsible for the excess. Just wait to see how far your $7500 property damage limit goes if you hit a BMW or better yet a building, and do foundation damage. Sometimes it's just better to go in and sit down with an insurance agent and have him explain how the insurance limits work. Safe Auto is all about minimizes claims and saving money. Your local insurance agent will probably try to sell you too much insurance, but would you rather be safe or sorry?

Your rate went up because the 3 years had not expired. You're going to get that with whatever insurance company you go to. The same thing goes with the 6 month period to re-evaluate a driving record; even if you miss it by one day, you're stuck with the same rate for the policy period - no one is going to pro-rate you, no matter how logical it sounds. What I do agree with you on though is Safe Auto's ability to get you with the fine print and "hurry-up" practices. If you don't jump through their hoops, they'll cancel your policy or close your claim before you can say "fine print." The good thing is, in most cases, if you're in the right, you can have your claim re-opened, but it sure does leave a bad taste in your mouth. The most disturbing thing about Safe Auto Insurance is not what they do to you, but what the every day insuree doesn't realize. If you call up Safe Auto Insurance and ask for "Full Coverage", what you're getting is Comprehensive, Collision, and Liability
